Mount Cottage Local Area

This area of South West Shropshire, with Mid Wales on the doorstep, is wonderfully unspoilt, unpolluted and comparatively traffic free.

The Stiperstones, the Long Mynd and the iron age fort of Bury Ditches are all nearby.

Both riding and fishing can be easily arranged. There are also lovely gardens and country houses/castles open to the public, including Clive of India's Powis Castle with its stunning hanging gardens.

The Mid Wales coast is only 60 miles away and the drive passes through outstandingly beautiful countryside.

Offa's Dyke is close, and the Shropshire Way runs through Bishops Castle.

Bishops Castle

Bishops Castle is a unique centre for exploring the surrounding countryside with well marked walks over moorland, farmland, hills and wooded valleys, and also in Forestry which is particularly good for dogs.

Bishops Castle, a very small market town of great character, has a long and fascinating history and many old and picturesque buildings. Little remains of the stone castle, built in the 12th century by the Bishop of Hereford, but much of the stone from it was used to build many of the houses at the top of the town.

The town has two banks, a post office, a good chemist and a small supermarket. There are other interesting shops, including those selling second hand books, crafts and antiques. A variety of good food is on offer and two of the six pubs, the Three Tuns and the Six Bells have their own breweries and serve traditional ales. There are many different events and festivals in the town throughout the year, and in the summer there seems to be something going on most weekends.
